The future of quantum, nano, and multi-scaled science and engineering

The Department of Applied Physics and Materials Science at Northern Arizona University offers multiple degree paths including a bachelor’s degree in Physics, a bachelor’s degree in Physics and Astronomy (merged major), a master’s degree in Applied Physics, and a doctoral degree in Applied Physics and Materials Science.

Applied Physics and Materials Science are rapidly developing transdisciplinary fields primarily focused on the application of physical phenomena to technology design and discovery of advanced functional materials. This intrinsic link between applied physics and materials science have made Applied Physics and Materials Science foundational disciplines for next generation technologies in nano-, meso- and quantum science.

The sense of community I felt while at NAU is something I very much miss.

Professor Gerrick Lindberg awarded a $666,000 NASA grant to study the hydrocarbon oceans on Titan, Saturn's largest moon.

Posted by ghu2 on December 08, 2020

Through a $666,000 grant, NASA is supporting a collaborative research project between Northern Arizona University and Lowell Observatory, “Investigating the Stability of Trace Species in Titan’s Lakes and Seas.” NAU will receive $349,000 over three years to conduct experiments that examine the behavior of various chemical interactions. Co-principal investigator on the project, Gerrick Lindberg, is an associate professor in NAU’s Department of Applied Physics and Materials Science. He is leading the effort to understand Titan’s lakes from the molecular scale,…

Professor Bertrand Cambou publishes paper, "Cryptography with Analog Scheme Using Memristors"

Posted by ghu2 on October 02, 2020

Professor Cambou recently published the paper, "Cryptography with Analog Scheme Using Memristors" in the ACM Journal on Emerging Technologies in Computing Systems. Abstract: Networks of low-power Internet of Things do not have always access to enough computing power to support mainstream cryptographic schemes; such schemes also consume computing power that can be exposed to side channel attacks. This article describes a method, that we call “cryptography with analog scheme using memristors,” leveraging the physical properties of memristors, which are active…

NAU ¡MIRA!/APMS scientists partner with ASU for NSF-funded Nanotechnology Collaborative Infrastructure Southwest (NCI-SW)

Posted by ghu2 on August 24, 2020

Funded through a National Science Foundation grant of more than $4 million, ¡MIRA!/APMS are teaming up with Arizona State University and other regional partners in a five-year effort to expand the reach of the Nanotechnology Collaborative Infrastructure Southwest (NCI-SW) to the communities of northern Arizona and the Four Corners region. NCI-SW is the southwest regional node of the National Nanotechnology Coordinated Infrastructure (NNCI.) Building on the work begun during the first NCI-SW led by ASU professor Trevor Thornton, NAU will…
