Celebrating the Life and Work of Dr. Leila Monaghan
Dr. Leila Monaghan’s contribution as a linguistic anthropologist and activist was far-reaching, with most of her writing and research in the areas of deaf sociality, disability justice, equity, and social justice. As a teacher, and colleague, Leila was kind, fun, compassionate, and an ardent supporter of her friends, students, and colleagues. As a scholar, her work contributed to disrupting and transforming unjust social institutions, as shown in the titles of books she edited and articles she published including “many ways of being deaf” and “deaf cultures in global perspective”.

She also wrote about women’s experiences at the Battle of Little Bighorn from a Linguistic Anthropology Perspective and about topics such as Ebonics. Her work emphasized empowerment and decolonization for all of the communities she worked with. Listen to her talk, pictured below here.
