Kipyego Cheluget PhD ’84

Kipyego Cheluget earned his PhD in political science and history from NAU in 1984. His emphasis was in political science, and he retains strong ties to the Department of Politics and International Affairs. Following NAU, Cheluget led a distinguished career as a leader and diplomat for Kenya and international organizations. Cheluget currently serves as Assistant Secretary General of the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa. Previously Kenya’s ambassador to Zambia and Malawi, he has had a prominent career in foreign service as an international civil servant. He played an integral role negotiating leading to the formation of the Customs Union of the East African Community, where he subsequently served as the organization’s Deputy Secretary General. He was awarded the Moran of the Order of the Burning Spear for his loyalty and dedication to Kenya. In addition to his leadership and diplomatic accomplishments, Dr. Cheluget writes about regional African economic development and is recognized as an expert on the subject.
