NAU Alumni Awards
Each Homecoming, the Northern Arizona University Alumni Association and the NAU President bestow awards on alumni to honor their service, commitment to NAU and leadership in role modeling the NAU spirit.
2019 President’s Alumni Awards
The President’s Alumni Awards honor an exceptional alumnus or alumna from each academic college whose service and accomplishments embody the university’s tradition of excellence. These remarkable alumni have been chosen for distinction because of their professional achievement; contributions of time and talent on behalf of the university; outstanding teaching or research at NAU; extraordinary dedication to the university through leadership, vision, creativity, or generosity; or by increasing NAU’s reputation and impact in the larger community.
Eric and Carin Anderson
CEIAS, BS Engineering ’81 and ’82
Eric and Carin Stevens Anderson are two of the family owners of SEAKR Engineering, the leading provider of advanced electronics for space applications. They have been generous to NAU with their time and philanthropy.
CEFNS, BS Forestry ’80
Deanne Shulman was the country’s first female smokejumper—a firefighter who parachutes into remote wildfire situations. She has been a faithful and generous supporter of NAU as a volunteer and philanthropic leader.
CAL, BA Interior Design ’77, Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters ’12
Vice Admiral (Ret.) Robin Braun was the first woman nominated to lead a Reserve Component of the military. She serves on the NAU Foundation Board and supports student success initiatives.
Dr. Angela “Angie” Golden
CHHS, MS Nursing ’98
Dr. Golden is a Family Nurse Practitioner and a past president of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners. She has served in multiple leadership positions at NAU.
FCB, BS Hotel and Restaurant Management ’80
Thomas Perkins was Chief Executive Officer and Director of CoreMark International. He is a longtime supporter of the W. A. Franke College of Business with his time and philanthropy.
Dr. Tony Ross
COE, Doctor of Education in Educational Administration ’84
Dr. Tony Ross’s career in education included serving as Vice President of Student Affairs at Cal State Los Angeles. He has dedicated his time and support to minority groups on the NAU campus.
SBS, BS Social Science ’59
Dr. Roy D. Morey was Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for International Organization Affairs for the US Department of State. He and his wife Dolores are longtime supporters of current and future Lumberjacks.

Jeff Ferris Volunteer of the Year
Jeff Willis is a senior partner in Snell & Wilmer L.L.P., Arizona’s largest law firm. He serves on the NAU Foundation Board, is a President Society-level donor, a member of the NAU Heritage Society, and a dedicated volunteer.

Joe & Marie Rolle Spirit of NAU Award
A former six-term Flagstaff mayor, Mr. Bavasi joined the NAU Foundation Board in 2001. His philanthropic support has impacted many students.

Excellence in Achievement by a Recent Graduate
Shelby Maticic is a founding member of the Brelby Theatre Company and serves as the company’s artistic director. She regularly supports, collaborates, and networks with fellow Lumberjacks.
BS Social & Behavioral Sciences ’89
Dr. Cliff Harkins Distinguished Citizen of the Year—Awarded Posthumously
Tyrone Thompson served as an assemblyman for the Nevada State Legislature from 2013 until his untimely death on May 4, 2019. He served on the NAU Alumni Association Board and volunteered with student organizations.

Dwight Patterson Alumna/Alumnus of the Year
Major General (Ret.) Earl Matthews is Senior Vice President and Chief Strategy Officer at Verodin Security. He and his wife recently endowed a scholarship for spouses of active duty military personnel.
