Scholars Academy

Since starting the Scholars Academy Program in 2008, Northern Arizona University (NAU) has hosted over 400 academics from around the world. This innovative program allows visiting international scholars and researchers the opportunity to:
- Better understand the American educational system
- Discuss various pedagogical strategies used in the American classroom
- Learn about the host department and the university campus
- Engage in conversations about your discipline and your research interests
- Get oriented to your department and sit in on classes
All visiting scholars are asked to attend the Scholars Academy, a cross-cultural seminar which will meet once per week throughout the semester. This seminar is designed to help you better understand the American educational system and discuss various pedagogical styles used in the American classroom. This seminar will allow participants to ask questions about some of their observations both in and outside of the classroom. In short, at the end of this seminar, visiting scholars will have a much better understanding of how the American educational system works and will be able to compare and contrast with your country’s educational system.
In addition to the Scholars Academy, visitors will be assigned a faculty mentor from the department in which you will be based. This mentor will assist you in learning about the host department and the university campus. You may also ask questions and engage in conversations about your discipline and your research interests with this mentor. The mentor will be your primary contact and will assist you in getting oriented to your department and obtaining permissions for you to sit in on classes. CIE will sponsor a number of activities intended to help you learn more about the history and culture of Arizona. Activities may include visits to the Grand Canyon, local businesses, Flagstaff City Hall and the Mayor’s office, the Museum of Northern Arizona, local schools, and Native American reservations.
All visiting scholars will be housed at the newly built the Skyview Apartments on the Northern Arizona University campus. These are suite style apartments and complete with a clubhouse, gym and many other included amenities. Males and females are house separately. It means that each visiting scholar will have his or her own personal room and share the bathroom with one other international scholar.
