NAU Teachers' Academy
On January 9, 2017,
Governor Doug Ducey called on the public universities, in partnership with
Community Colleges, to develop “a plan for the design of an Arizona Teacher
Academy” as part of his multi-point plan to improve K-12 education.
Specifically, Governor Ducey cited the issue of student debt as one factor deterring students from choosing
education as a career path, and he expressed his strong commitment to getting
qualified teachers' in Arizona’s classrooms.
NAU responded to
this call and created the NAU Teachers’ Academy, which along with its community college partners,
provides a constructive solution to the teacher shortage by increasing the
pathways to prepare teachers-with low-cost options. Pathways include the expansion of the Grow
Your Own programs and the NAU Teacher Intern Preparation Program for Career
Grow Your Own Partnerships
Our Grow Your Own partnerships prepare future teachers who
are committed to their local communities. These partnerships identify and train future teachers in
communities with teacher shortages. GYO partnerships are created in part due to the program’s location in a
high need area with numerous vacancies in school districts, as well as the
presence of established partnerships with a community college and/or support
from the local school districts.
2017, students enrolling in select Teacher Education programs at the following
sites qualify for inclusion in the NAU Teachers’ Academy:
Eligible Sites and Programs
- Mohave/Kingman- (Bullhead City/Colorado River, Kingman, Lake Havasu)
- Navajo County/Show Low- (Show Low, White River, Chinle, Tuba City, Ft Defiance, Ganado, Kayenta, Keams Canyon)
- South Mountain/Phoenix
Dual Major-Special and Elementary Education
We also have
programs that are attractive to Career Changers because they provide the
flexibility to allow professionals with degrees outside of education to earn
teaching certificates while working as teachers. The NAU Teacher Internship
Preparation Program (TIPP) offers an
innovative certificate program, allowing qualified candidates to complete
requirements for a teaching certificate while they are serving as the paid
teacher-of-record. Individuals with content expertise earn certification while
meeting the needs of the schools. This program is currently available in
Elementary Education and Special Education with plans to expand it to secondary
program offerings this summer. For more information on the TIPP program, visit:

have outstanding teachers – and enough of them – ready to educate generations
of Arizona children. At NAU, we are bringing the possibility of earning a
teaching degree close to home, opening doors for careers in education and
benefitting the communities that need it the most.
