Bachelor of Science in American Political Studies

This degree requires 120 completed credit hours, and is designed to provide you with:

  • political theory
  • political principles
  • government practices
  • electives


You must complete 120 units of coursework as outlined below:

  • 35 units of liberal studies requirements
  • at least 54 units of major requirements - 18 core + 18 POS component + 18 cross-disciplinary
  • 18 units of cross-disciplinary emphasis requirements 
  • elective courses, if needed, to reach an overall total of at least 120 units 

For the cross-disciplinary option, students may select one of the suggested thematic focuses:

  • administration
  • American legal system
  • cultural diversity
  • economy and politics
  • environment
  • gender
  • Native American

Be aware that some courses required for your degree may have prerequisites to take before enrolling.

You must complete Northern Arizona University's diversity requirement by taking two 3-unit courses:

  • one in ethnic diversity
  • one in global awareness 

Northern Arizona University requires that at least 30 units of the courses you take for your degree be upper-division (300 and above) courses. 

At least 15 of the 36 units required for this major must be from Northern Arizona University courses. These 15 units may not include individualized courses.
