Awards and Results

Rocky Mountain Classic in Pueblo, Colorado, September 23-25, 2016 

After our first tournament of the year, we have some excited results!

In speech competition, at a tournament with 12 universities from CA, AZ, WY, CO, NE, TX, and UT, our students won a number of awards.
Alicia Batice received 3rd in Program Oral Interpretation and 2nd in Persuasive Speaking.
Anthony Violissi received 2nd Place in Junior Persuasive Speaking.
Alec Thanig received 6th place in Persuasive Speaking.
Madeline Ramirez received 4th place in Informative Speaking.
Heaven Smythe received 2nd place in Junior Impromptu and 4th place in After-Dinner Speaking.
Nick Julian received 6th place in Extemporaneous Speaking, 1st place in Communication Analysis. In addition, Nick received 3rd place speaker in Open Parliamentary Debate out of 62 competitors.

Upcoming.

Special Recognition:  Congrats to Alicia Batice, this year’s recipient of the Paul Gaske Award for the 2016 Outstanding Speaker.  Out of the hundreds of competitors at this year’s Aztec Invitational, only one students receives the award and cash scholarship.  Alicia’s performances in both debate and in individual speaking events set her apart from every other competitor. Congrats Alicia!

Scholarship Information

The School of Communication at NAU offers scholarships to many students who participate competitively on the Speech & Debate team.  The purpose of the scholarship is to facilitate the education of deserving forensics competitors.  Our scholarships are financially backed through individual donations and foundational support from many of NAU's alumni, previous competitors, family, and other gracious donors.
