Message from the Dean

Welcome to our website and to Northern Arizona University.

Our highly regarded and National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) accredited College of Education (COE) offers more than 40 degree programs; preparing teachers at the undergraduate, master's, and doctoral levels of study, as well as certificate programs in the areas of education and human services. Here at NAU, faculty strive to challenge and prepare students to work with diverse perspectives and values and to foster student knowledge, skills and attitudes that will contribute to the education of the students they will serve. (Links on the left provide specific information about each degree and non-degree program.)

The College of Education is a key member of the Professional Education Unit at Northern Arizona University. Our vision involves drawing on the best practices of the past, experimenting with and researching new ideas, and helping professionals to accept their roles as leaders in education. Our mission is to prepare competent and committed professionals who will make positive differences for children, young adults, and others in schools.

Our NCATE accreditation is a tribute to the quality of our academic programs. Accreditation of schools or colleges of education indicates that the university underwent rigorous external review by professionals, that performance of a teacher candidate in the program has been thoroughly assessed before he or she is recommended for licensure, and that programs meet standards set by the teaching profession at large. We are extremely proud that Northern Arizona University is currently the only NCATE accredited institution in Arizona. The excellence of our programs is also evidenced by the fact that our Community Counseling and School Counseling programs are accredited by CACREP. Our School Psychology programs have also been noted for their excellence as evidenced by NASP accreditation.

As the dean of the College of Education, I am excited about my role in both leading and supporting such a fine College of Education. I am keenly aware of the meaningful and important ways NAU is impacting Arizona and our region. As one of the largest teacher preparation program in the state, NAU has a rich history aligned with many success stories. For decades NAU has educated teachers, school administrators, researchers, counselors and school psychologists who have gone on to make a difference in the world. Many of our programs are nationally recognized for their impact and cutting edge research. Hence, we have much to be proud of. But I believe the best is yet to come as we move forward with new, innovative programs and a renewed mission to reach and enrich the lives of those we serve. It is my privilege to work with such a distinguished faculty and staff who are passionate about teaching and learning. In this time of new literacies, global perspectives, and increased expectations for high-quality teacher instruction, the faculty and staff at NAU will continue to work together as a high achieving, dynamic and collaborative faculty to promote best practice in research and instruction.

I enjoy meeting and getting to know our students and alumni. Please call or stop by anytime to visit.
