We award a number of scholarships to outstanding students enrolled in or entering one of our undergraduate or graduate programs.

The awards are announced each year in April during the Mathematics and Statistics Honors Week reception.

The Vesto M. Slipher Scholarship (Mathematics Award)


Outstanding junior or senior majoring in mathematics or statistics.

Must have at least two semesters of remaining course work to be completed

Approximate Value: $1500 

Charles E. Little Mathematics Education Scholarship


  • Outstanding junior majoring (full-time enrollment) in mathematics, statistics, or Mathematics Education
  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0
  • US citizen
  • Career aspirations to be a high school mathematics teacher
  • Preference to Arizona high school graduates

Approximate Value: $1000 

Joseph Mutter Mathematics Scholarship


  • Outstanding sophomore, junior, or senior majoring in mathematics or statistics or mathematics education
  • Preference will be given to graduates of high schools in Coconino County

Approximate Value: $1000 

Karan and Terence Hall Scholarship


  • Deserving junior or senior majoring in mathematics or statistics
  • Preference will be given to candidates maintaining or exceeding a cumulative GPA of 3.0 who demonstrate scholastic merit and/or financial need

Approximate Value: $1,800 

J. Harvey Butchart Mathematics Scholarship


  • Outstanding junior or senior majoring in mathematics, statistics, or mathematics education

Approximate Value: $1100 

John W. Jennison and William L. Parks Mathematics Scholarship


  • Outstanding undergraduate student majoring in math
  • Maintain a GPA of 3.2 or higher
  • Demonstrate financial need
  • U.S. citizen
Approximate Value: 2 Awards of $1000 each

Evelyn O. Bychinsky Award for Students of Promise in Mathematics

  • Outstanding Sophomore or Junior majoring in Mathematics who show interest in mathematics through course work, field of study or extracurricular activities.
Approximate Value: $1700

  1. Complete a scholarship application form and return it with academic transcripts as indicated on the form.
  2. Arrange for two scholarship recommendation forms to be filled out and returned. Recommenders should typically be professors in your mathematics or statistics courses.

Graduate scholarships

Available graduate scholarships and approximate award values:

The Arthur and Catharine B. Adel Scholarship (Mathematics Award)

Eligibility: Outstanding incoming and/or continuing graduate student in mathematics, statistics, or math education.

Approximate value: $1,500 total for one or two scholarships 

Carlson Diekelman Rushall Schroeder Memorial Endowed Scholarship

Eligibility: Graduate teaching assistant in mathematics exhibiting excellence in the classroom as both a student and teacher.

Approximate value: $500 

Application process

If you are a grad student, there is no formal scholarship application process. All graduate students and teaching assistants are considered for these awards.
