Before joining the musicology faculty at NAU in 2002, James Leve was an Assistant Professor of the Humanities at Fitchburg State College in Massachusetts for three years.
Leve's primary research interests are American musical theater and seventeenth-century Italian comic opera. He recently published American Musical Theater (Oxford University Press), the first comprehensive college textbook on musical theater. He is also the author of Kander and Ebb (Yale University Press, 2009), and a modern edition and English translation of Jacopo Melani’s 1658 comic opera Il potestà di Colognole (A-R EdItions, 2006).
Leve’s current projects include a monograph on the Broadway composer Charles Strouse and a study of disability in musical theater. He is also co-editing an essay collection on the construction of childhood in musical theater (Ashgate, forthcoming).
