How to apply: MA English – Secondary English Education emphasis

Application Materials Required

To be considered for admission, you must submit the following materials on the Graduate College application website:

  • graduate admissions application
  • official transcripts
  • TOEFL score (international students)
  • statement of purpose
  • sample academic paper
  • three letters of recommendation addressing your academic preparation and your potential to be an effective teacher. At least two recommendations should be from academic professionals. 

Once admitted to the program (within one month of admittance or within one month of taking your first class at NAU), you will need to submit a copy of your State-approved Identity-Verified Print (IVP) fingerprint clearance card, obtainable through the Arizona Department of Public Safety (602-223-2279).This copy can be mailed to Angela Hansen, Department of English, Box 6032, Northern Arizona University, Flagstaff, AZ 86011-6032 or dropped off at the English department office in the first floor of the Liberal Arts building.

To be considered for a Graduate Teaching Assistantship, you must also complete the Graduate Assistantship Application Form and upload it to the Graduate College application website . (Selection begins in early February: for first-round consideration of your GA application, submit all materials by February 1.)

Applications for program admission are reviewed year round.  However, classes can fill quickly, so be sure to apply well in advance of the semester you plan to begin attending.
