Health Psychology Center
What is health psychology?
Continued advances in research have led to a new way of thinking
about health and illness which has turned into a unique field of medicine and
health care called health psychology.
The concept of health psychology recognizes these influences
as factors affecting health and illness:
- biological composition (genes)
- behavior (lifestyle choices, stress, health
beliefs)
- social conditions (culture, relationships)
Healthy psychology addresses four main areas:
- promotion and maintenance of health
- prevention and treatment of illness
- identification of causes of illness
- improvement of health care system and policies
Most health psychologists focus on prevention research and
teaching, but others work with other health services like doctors and
therapists to improve the overall health and well being of individuals.
The Health Psychology Center
The Center is a multi-purpose service facility operated by
the Psychology Department. Master’s
students in the clinical program gain their training
experience at the Center by providing services to the community and university agencies. The Center also provides research
opportunities for psychology students and collaborates with other health
professionals and programs at Northern Arizona University.
