Listen to Mike lamp's award winning report on "Planet Pluto"

Mike Lamp, KNAU Morning Edition announcer/reporter, is the 1999 winner of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) Science Journalism Award in the radio category. The competition is the country's premier award for excellence in science journalism. Lamp is being honored for his radio feature entitled "Planet Pluto" which aired on KNAU/Northern Arizona Public Radio during February 1999. AAAS judges cited his effective use of the radio medium, especially interviews and ambient sound, to convey concepts from a primarily visual field of science. The judges also commended his wide coverage of material, balanced viewpoint, demonstration of science's impact on society and a century's long perspective on a scientific issue.

For 50 years, the AAAS Science Journalism Awards have played a central role in defining the standards of excellence for science journalism. Those honored by the award represent the most prominent journalists in the nation, several of whom also are Pulitzer Prize and Emmy recipients. Lamp will receive the 1999 AAAS Science Journalism Award in February at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History in Washington, D.C. The awards ceremony is held in conjunction with the AAAS Annual Meeting and Science Innovation Exposition.
