FERPA stands for the Family Education Rights and
Privacy Act of 1974. While your academic information is completely
protected, all of your contact information is considered public. NAU does not
generally make this information available to those without an academic need to
know. However, if you desire, you may restrict the release of any public
information at the University through FERPA.
You can edit your FERPA/Directory Restrictionsin your
LOUIE Student Center.
Click on the drop-down arrow in the other personal textbox, located
under the Personal Information heading in your LOUIE Student Center. Highlight
Privacy Settings, and then click the circle, with the two arrows, next to it,
as shown in Figure 1 below.

FERPA Restrictions
The Edit FERPA/Directory Restrictions page lists many Restriction Categories beginning with your addresses, as displayed in Figure
3 below. All of the Restriction Categories include
contact and personal information about you which you are allowed to restrict or
release. When you choose to restrict the release of information, that
information will not be released to any source, including publications such as
telephone directories at the University.
The new LOUIE SA System provides several different methods for restricting
and releasing information using FERPA Restrictions. First, you can choose to
Restrict All Fields or Release All Restrictions in
every Restriction Category which includes addresses, your
email address, names, your personal data such as date of birth and personnel
status, and phone numbers by clicking on one of the yellow buttons, shown
framed in red in Figure 3 below.
You can choose to restrict the release of all information in every
Restriction Category by clicking on the Restrict All Fields button, shown
framed in red on the left side of the page in Figure 3 below. If you have
already chosen to restrict information, you can choose to release all
restricted information by clicking on the Release All Restrictions button on
the right side of the page, also shown framed in red in Figure 3.

Another method used for restricting and releasing your contact information
is to Restrict Allor
Release All for each Restriction Category.
For example, if you wanted to restrict all of your addresses while releasing
the other contact information such as email address, names, personal data, and
phone numbers, you would click on the yellow Restrict All
button, shown framed in red, under the heading FERPA Address Viewas
displayed in Figure 4 below.
To restrict or release all information in just one Restriction
Category at a time, you can click on the Restrict All or Release All buttons,
shown framed in red, underneath a specific category such as FERPA Address View,
as displayed in Figure 4 below.

You can also scroll through all Restriction Categories and
select them individually by clicking on the checkbox in the Restrict column
for each item you wish to restrict or release. If the box is checked, it will
be restricted. You can release that information by clicking on the box to
remove the checkmark.
FERPA Email, Names, and Personal Data Views are displayed in Figure 5
below. You can choose to restrict your date of birth and release the rest of
the information in Figure 5 by clicking the checkbox next to Date of Birth and
leaving the other checkboxes unchecked.

As you scroll to the bottom of the Edit FERPA/Directory Restrictions page, you will see the Phone FERPA View. As an
example, we will choose to restrict all phone numbers in this Restriction
Category. When you are finished selecting the information you wish to
restrict and release, click the Save button at the bottom of
the page, shown framed in red in Figure 6 below. You can click
on the hyperlink to Return to FERPA Restrictions Summary to
review the information you have selected at any time.
**PLEASE NOTE: We recommend that you leave at least
your name unrestricted. If you restrict your Preferred and Primary names under
FERPA Names View, your name will NOT show up in the Blackboard Learn system. You
will appear only as your NAU user ID.
To restrict all of your phone numbers in the Phone FERPA View, you
can either click on each checkbox, one at a time, or click the Restrict All
button, as shown in Figure 6 below. Once you have completed your selections to
restrict and release information, you must click the Save button, shown framed
in red, at the bottom of the page.
