Installing Microsoft Office for Macintosh on NAU-Owned Computers

Microsoft Office for Macintosh (All Versions)

Microsoft Office for Macintosh version 2011 is the latest version.  This version only runs on Intel-based Macs and is compatible with Mac OS X up through Lion (10.7).  It  includes Word, Excel, Powerpoint and Outlook.

Microsoft Office 2008 for Macintosh is slightly older, supports both PowerPC and Intel based Macs and is compatible with Mac OS X up through Snow Leopard (10.6.x).   It includes Word, Excel, Powerpoint and Entourage. After installing this version you must also install the Entourage Web Services update to use Entourage with NAU's email server.  The EWS-1305-EN.dmg file containing the update is stored in the same folder as Office 2008.

  1. In the Finder menu, click Go > Connect to Server.
  2. In the "Connect to Server" dialog box, type in smb://naushares/officemac
    • (If you get an error, repeat these steps and enter smb://naushares.ucc.nau.edu/officemac into the "Connect to Server" box.)
  3. A login box will appear. Enter information as follows:
    • Workgroup/Domain = NAU (if prompted)
    • Username = your NAU ID (e.g. abc123)
    • Password = your email password
  4. Click OK and the OfficeMac window will open.

To install: Open the Office folder of your choice on the server and then double-click the office disk image file (ending in either .ISO or .DMG) in that folder to mount it. This will open the disk image and show you the installer for the version of Office you selected. Double click that installer to install Office on your Mac.

To burn a copy to a recordable DVD for later install: first drag and drop the desired Office .ISO or .DMG file to your desktop to copy the files to your local hard drive. After the copy completes, control-click the .ISO or .DMG file you copied and choose "Burn to disk..." from the contextual menu that appears.
