2017 Jazz Madrigal Festival
The annual Northern Arizona University Vocal Jazz Madrigal Festival, one of the largest festivals of its kind in the Southwestern United States, features special guest clinicians and over 140 high school ensembles from Arizona and nearby states. The two-day festival includes a host concert in which choirs from NAU and professional groups of national and international stature appear.
This event will be held on the NAU campus in Flagstaff on Friday, February 10 and Saturday, February 11, 2017. Ensembles of all ability levels are invited to participate.
We are pleased to announce the following Madrigal clinicians: Dr. Angela Broeker (University of St.Thomas), Mr. John Byun (Riverside City College), and Dr. Jo-Michael Scheibe (University of Southern California).
Vocal Jazz clinicians will be Mr. Dave Barduhn (Mt. Hood Community College, retired) and Dr. Kate Reid (University of Miami)
COST - $200.00 (please note small price increase) – for each jazz or madrigal ensemble. Initially, we will accept only TWO ensembles per director. Registration begins 7:00 a.m., Monday, October 24, 2016 and runs until 5:00 p.m., Friday, October 28, 2016. NOTE: registration accepted by EMAIL ONLY (no faxes.)
Information packets will be sent out the third week of September.
Additional ensembles will be accepted only after all applicants have been given the opportunity to schedule an ensemble. Available slots will be assigned to additional ensembles after the October 24-28 registration period. Entry fee is due by 5:00 p.m., Friday, December 9, 2016. If the entry fee is not received by this date, reserved times will be given to the first school on the waiting list and your school moved to the bottom of the waiting list. Please note that this will be strictly enforced this year due to the high demand for festival slots.
This year's guest ensemble is CANTUS. The “intellectually, emotionally and musically rich” (StarTribune) men’s vocal ensemble Cantus is known for its trademark warmth and blend, innovative programming and engaging performances of music ranging from the Renaissance to the 21st century. Working without a conductor, the members of Cantus rehearse and perform as chamber musicians, each contributing to the entirety of the artistic process. Cantus performs more than 60 concerts each year in national and international touring, and in its home of Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minnesota and has released 17 albums on its self-titled label.
