Provide feedback on assignments and assessments to students so they know how they are performing through the semester.

Important notes:

The following mechanisms must be in place for all First Year Learning Initiative courses (FYLI):

  • mechanisms to capture data about attendance and performance within the first two weeks of the course
  • mechanisms to identify students who will benefit from support services offered by the university

Consider the following methods for to help you and your students benefit from feedback:

  • low-stakes quizzes
  • pre-screen students on fundamental topics of the course
  • auto-graded assessments and other activities
  • consider “scratch off” response sheets for in-class activities (more information can be found through the Faculty Development Program)
  • team-based learning

Allow the first few reading assignments to be available online for students that have not yet purchased a textbook for your course.
