Title: Making Business Research Relevant

There are three events in The W. A. Franke College of Business symposium will take place over two days:

  • Oral presentation competition
  • Bloomberg Businessweek writing competition
  • Poster presentations

April 23, 2014: Sweet Endings
A dessert tasting event at The J. Willard and Alice S. Marriott Demonstration Kitchen in the School of Hotel and Restaurant Management building (#33).  The first 30 people will be admitted to judge and taste for this Hotel and Restaurant Management Class.  Others are welcome to view the students in action and sample a selection of student-made desserts.
April 24, 2014: Oral Presentation Competition

Time and Location

2:00 - 3:45pm

Gardner Auditorium (Room 101, Bldg. #81, South Campus)

Eligibility

All undergraduate students who are HRM or IHM majors or who are admitted to the Business Professional Program at The W. A. Franke College of Business are eligible.  Non-FCB majors are eligible to participate on a team so long as a majority of the team are FCB majors.

Instructions

One formal business presentation will be heard from each major in the college (ACC, CIS, ECO, FIN, MGT, MKT, HRM, IHM).  Teams may either be composed of all majors in the represented area or could be interdisciplinary but with a presentation focused on a particular class. 

Each 7-minute presentation must contain original work by the students - an analysis of a problem, a creation of a business or marketing plan, a study conducted by the students, etc., demonstrating an addition to the scholarship of the field.

Judges

The panel is comprised of local business leaders and/or prominent alumni. 

Prizes

Prizes will be announced at the event. Team members will split these cash prizes:
  1. 1st place: $600
  2. 2nd place: $300
  3. 3rd place: $100 
April 24, 2014: Bloomberg Businessweek Writing Competition

The W. A. Franke BloombergBusinessweek Prize for Excellence in Writing will be awarded to the undergraduate winners of a competition held for the purposes of encouraging and rewarding the writing and critical thinking skills of The W. A. Franke College of Business students.

Eligibility

All undergraduate students admitted to the Business Professional Program at The W. A. Franke College of Business are eligible.

Instructions

Students will review a Businessweek article provided to them and

  • Draft an executive summary of the article (not to exceed 1 page)
  • Conduct follow up research using business periodicals and write business Memorandum (addressed to Dean Craig Van Slyke) updating the topic of the Businessweek article so that the reader has current information on the topic (not to exceed 1 page). 

All work must be the original work of an individual student; only one entry per student is allowed. Collaboration with others is prohibited.

Submissions must be typed and single-spaced, with double-spaces between paragraphs and 1" margins on all sides.

Authors must submit two cover pages. The first cover page must list the author’s name, NAU id number, phone number and e-mail address as well as the title of the paper and a word count. The second cover sheet must list only the title of the paper and not include the author’s name.

Deadline

Submit by e-mail to Cindy Thompson in the dean’s office no later than Thursday, April 10, 2014

Authors retain all rights to their entries, but The W.A. Franke College of Business will have the non-exclusive right to print winning submissions in its publications and on its websites.

    Judging

    Submissions will be judged using the following criteria: 

    • Quality of writing (clarity of style, coherence, organization, precision, readability, professionalism, and grammar and mechanics)
    • Effectiveness as a stand-alone overview of the article 
    • Accuracy of content

    Prizes

    1. $250 The BusinessWeek First prize
    2. $150 Second prize
    3. $75 Third prize                          

    Winners announcement

    The winning submission may be reproduced in its entirety on the FCB website. The winning submissions will be provided to Businessweek and may be reproduced in their entirely by Bloomberg Businessweek.  

    The W. A. Franke College of Business reserves the right not to award any or all prizes if the judging panel determines that entries do not meet the standards of a winning paper.

    April 25, 2014: Poster presentations

    The W. A. Franke College of Business poster presentations will be an integral part of NAU's university-wide event in the Walkup Skydome on Friday, April 25, 2014.

    Instructions

    Submission: Students are to use the Undergraduate Symposium online system to register for the poster presentation session. The link to this system is available on the UG Symposium webpage.

    Registration deadline: March 17, 2014

    Presentation schedule

    • 8:00-9:00am: Posters set-up (posters must remain up all day)
    • 9:00-11:00am: Session 1
    • 2:00-4:00pm: Session 2
    • 4:00-5:00pm: Poster take down

    Registered students will be assigned to present their posters during only one of the session times.

    Poster requirements

    Size: single sheet, 34"x44" maximum
