NAUreads asks all first-year students to read the same book and encourages students to participate in conversations about the book. This provides all our first year students with a common experience as they begin their educational journey. Students can use the bookto initiate conversations and build community with their new classmates, roommates, and faculty. The program includes opportunities to participate in:
- Book club discussions with faculty and staff
- Author presentations
- Film series related to the books central themes and issues
- Lectures on topics related to the book
- Class discussion based on the book
NAUreads is excited
to announce the 2014 selection, This I
Believe, edited by Jay Allison and Dan Gediman.
The 2014 selection This I Believe
is a public dialogue about belief chosen for its ability to challenge students
to examine the core values that guide their daily lives. This collection of essays, written by people
from all walks of life, raises awareness and tolerance of
intergenerational and cultural likenesses and differences. With perspectives
representing diverse identities, we hope students will find relatable voices
and be encouraged to explore and refine their core values as they navigate
their new surroundings.
As you read This I Believe, consider
which values have shaped your life. How do these values help prepare you to be
a student at Northern Arizona University? Which values are you still in the
process of discovering and which ones are firmly rooted in your belief system?
First-Year students will be given a complimentary copy of the book at
Orientation. Parents and the NAU community may purchase a copy at the NAU
