How are you leaving your mark at NAU? Become an Academic Peer Leader to discover how your academic triumphs and experiences can help first-year students and make a difference on campus! As an Academic Peer Leader you will be able to connect with first-year students and become a key role model in their lives as they transition to college. See below for descriptions of the different ways you can leave your mark at NAU!

Our Academic Peer Leader positions include:

ASC-ME Coach

As an ASC-ME Coach, you will be expected to:

  • Attend assigned NAU 120/NAU 130 classes weekly and co-facilitate activities and lessons
  • Provide one-on-one coaching and mentorship for first-year students
  • Work approximately 11 hours per week at $9/hr.
  • Attend related ATP events (Sex Fest, NAU Reads events, etc.)
  • Attend all trainings and weekly CARE Team Meetings.
  • Conduct yourself professionally in all work-related contexts

Peer Instructor

As a Peer Instructor, you will be expected to:

  • Teach two sections of NAU 100 as the instructor of record
  • Create weekly lesson plans.
  • Schedule and attend weekly office hours.
  • Work approximately 9 hours per week at $9/hr.
  • Attend weekly Teaching Team Meetings
  • Conduct yourself professionally in all work-related contexts.

 International Peer Coach

As an IPC, you will be expected to:

  • Attend assigned NAU 120 classes weekly and co-facilitate activities and lessons.
  • Provide one on one coaching and mentorship for international students enrolled in a study skills course.
  • Work approximately 11 hours per week at $9/hr.
  • Attend related ATP events (Sex Fest, NAU Reads events, etc.)
  • Attend all trainings and weekly CARE Team Meetings.
  • Conduct yourself professionally in all work-related contexts.

 Peak Performance Math Coach

As a Math Coach you will be expected to:

  • Provide math tutoring in an online setting.
  • Offer college-student perspective and support to incoming first-year students.
  • Attend weekly conference calls with a team leader and fellow Math Coaches.
  • Work approximately 15-20 hours per week during the summer at $9/hr.

How To Apply

In order to apply, you will need to complete the following steps:

1.     Complete the online application on or before the final deadline on 5:00pm MST on Sunday, October 19th. Applications submitted after that date will NOT be considered. 

  • Please note that you must be logged into your NAU Gmail account in order to access this application.
  • If you have a personal Gmail account, it may interfere with your NAU login. You may want to try using a different browser.

2.    If you are selected for an in person interview, you will be required to bring a paper copy of your resume and a cover letter as your "ticket in". You may wish to begin preparing these materials in advance of scheduling an interview.

3.    You will need to contact one professional reference and ask them to complete our online recommendation form, available below.  

  • If you are applying for a Peak Performance Math Coach position, your reference MUST be from a current NAU faculty member in the Math Department.
  • The deadline to submit recommendations is 5:00pm MST on Sunday, October 26th.  
  • When contacting your reference, please be sure to provide them with your NAU student email address (in the form abc123@nau.edu). They will need this information to complete your recommendation. 
Important Information
  • There is a semester-long training class you would be required to take if selected for a Peer Coach or Peer Instructor position. The class meets Monday nights at 4:00pm-6:30pm.
  • Interview process includes a Group Interview on either October 23rd or 26th for all; and an individual interview (pending your scores from the application, resume, cover letter and group interview)
  • Positions include a Fall stipend, hourly pay and a stipend for the training class

Please nominate any NAU students that you think would make a great Academic Peer Leader, so we can send them an invitation to apply. We're looking for candidates with strong academic records who are interested in helping other NAU students achieve success in the first year!

Preparing Your Application

We require all applicants to submit a resume, cover letter, and one academic or professional recommendation in order to be considered for positions with our department.
