Licensing Agency: The Collegiate Licensing Company
The Collegiate Licensing Company (CLC) is the licensing agent for Northern Arizona University. As such, CLC is responsible for administering
the licenses (third party permissions for vendors and manufacturers), including
processing of vendor applications, collecting and distributing royalties, and
enforcing proper trademark usage.
Collegiate Licensing Company (CLC)
is the nations’ leading collegiate licensing and marketing representative. Formed in 1981, CLC assists collegiate
licensors (trademark owners) in protecting and controlling the use of their
logos through licensing, the granting of rights to a third party to produce
items with NAU trademarks. In 2007, CLC
was purchased by global sports, fashion, and media leader, IMG Worldwide and
operates as an affiliate unit of IMG College.
The CLC consortium consists of
nearly 200 universities, bowl games, athletic conferences, the NCAA, and the Heisman
Trophy. Based in Atlanta, CLC provides
its member institutions the resources and expertise necessary to maximize
licensing revenue potential.
Licensing Agreements
There are several types of
licensing agreements available to vendors and manufacturers wishing to produce
apparel, merchandise or other items bearing NAU trademarks. The following agreements are administered by
The Collegiate Licensing Company, offering various levels of permission to use
NAU indicia.
- Standard
License - For production of branded merchandise to be sold by an individual
or company at retail. This license
allows the vendor to hold a license for more than 5 local schools and carries a
$250 annual administrative fee and requires payment of advance fees.
- Restricted
License/Internal Campus Supplier – For production of branded products sold
to the institution for internal consumption only. Items cannot be resold. This type of license does not require
reporting of royalties and carries a $100 annual administrative fee. Advance fees are waived.
- Local
License – For local companies and/or individuals geographically confined to
in-state or “local region” that intend to make products for resale or for
internal consumption. This license
allows production of merchandise for up to 5 schools from the “local area” and
carries a $50 annual administrative fee.
Local licensees are required to report royalties quarterly and pay
annual advance fees.
Premium
License – For companies of manufacturers that wish to produce products used
as a premium item. A product is
considered a premium item when it is used to increase the sales of another
product, increase a company’s brand recognition or further a company’s
association with a university. Premium may be subject to payment of a higher
royalty rate and include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Products being given away or sold in conjunction
with a consumer promotion
- Products co-branded with corporate and
university logos
- Products used for internal incentives
- Produces used as corporate rewards/gifts
