Licensing Agency: The Collegiate Licensing Company

The Collegiate Licensing Company (CLC) is the licensing agent for Northern Arizona University. As such, CLC is responsible for administering the licenses (third party permissions for vendors and manufacturers), including processing of vendor applications, collecting and distributing royalties, and enforcing proper trademark usage.

Collegiate Licensing Company (CLC) is the nations’ leading collegiate licensing and marketing representative. Formed in 1981, CLC assists collegiate licensors (trademark owners) in protecting and controlling the use of their logos through licensing, the granting of rights to a third party to produce items with NAU trademarks. In 2007, CLC was purchased by global sports, fashion, and media leader, IMG Worldwide and operates as an affiliate unit of IMG College.

The CLC consortium consists of nearly 200 universities, bowl games, athletic conferences, the NCAA, and the Heisman Trophy.  Based in Atlanta, CLC provides its member institutions the resources and expertise necessary to maximize licensing revenue potential.

Licensing Agreements

There are several types of licensing agreements available to vendors and manufacturers wishing to produce apparel, merchandise or other items bearing NAU trademarks. The following agreements are administered by The Collegiate Licensing Company, offering various levels of permission to use NAU indicia.
  • Standard License - For production of branded merchandise to be sold by an individual or company at retail. This license allows the vendor to hold a license for more than 5 local schools and carries a $250 annual administrative fee and requires payment of advance fees.
  • Restricted License/Internal Campus Supplier – For production of branded products sold to the institution for internal consumption only.  Items cannot be resold. This type of license does not require reporting of royalties and carries a $100 annual administrative fee.  Advance fees are waived.
  • Local License – For local companies and/or individuals geographically confined to in-state or “local region” that intend to make products for resale or for internal consumption. This license allows production of merchandise for up to 5 schools from the “local area” and carries a $50 annual administrative fee.  Local licensees are required to report royalties quarterly and pay annual advance fees.
  • Premium License – For companies of manufacturers that wish to produce products used as a premium item. A product is considered a premium item when it is used to increase the sales of another product, increase a company’s brand recognition or further a company’s association with a university. Premium may be subject to payment of a higher royalty rate and include, but are not limited to, the following:
    • Products being given away or sold in conjunction with a consumer promotion
    • Products co-branded with corporate and university logos
    • Products used for internal incentives
