Study abroad opportunities

Study sociology in Italy

The Siena School offers you a semester-track program with a list of classes that are pre-approved for Northern Arizona University students. You will take an intensive Italian language and culture course depending upon your level. Siena School also offers three and four week winter and summer programs.

Siena sociology internship

If you participate in the internship course, you’ll apply the theoretical knowledge you get in this classroom to providing a service in one of many locations around Siena, such as a home for the elderly or a center for psychiatric rehabilitation.

Internship requirements

If you choose to do a sociology internship, you must have at least an intermediate level of Italian language skills. If you don’t have an advanced enough level of Italian, you may complete a comparable research project on a topic in conjunction with a professor from the program.

Earn two master’s degrees in two years

If you’re a Master of Arts in Applied Sociology student, you have the opportunity to pursue graduate work for one year in Flagstaff, and a second year at University of Botswana. University of Botswana students are also welcome to apply.

At the end of two years, you will earn two master's degrees—one from Northern Arizona University in applied sociology, and one from the University of Botswana in development studies.  While much of the focus will be on Southern Africa, this program teaches principles that have relevance throughout the developing world.

The program is designed to give you an understanding of the human resources available to manage the process of development and ways for addressing the challenges associated with this process, such as:

  • natural resource management
  • population growth
  • gender inequities
  • project implementation and management
  • the HIV/AIDS epidemic

You must be nominated by your host institution—Northern Arizona University or the University of Botswana—for participation in this program. You will be required to remain in good academic and non-academic standing. Both universities reserve the right to dismiss students from the program if they fail to comply in this regard.

You will be subject to tuition, costs, and other fees as required by each institution. You will be directly obligated to pay these fees and will be responsible for all other costs associated with your stay at the host institution.
