Opportunities for underrepresented groups
Not all groups have been historically well-represented in
undergraduate research, especially in science, technology, engineering, and
mathematics (STEM). We aim to change that. Find

Initiative Maximizing Student Diversity at NAU (IMSD)
The IMSD training program combines coursework and paid laboratory experience in
biomedical research with a faculty mentor.
Institute for Tribal Environmental Professionals (ITEP) Environmental
Education Outreach Program (EEOP) internships
These programs provide Native American and other college students the opportunity
to gain hands-on skills with the Environmental Protection Agency and other
governmental or tribal environmental offices. The areas of emphasis are
environmental issues and local air quality.
Shima’ nahasdza’a’n bee ‘iina’ (Mother Earth Give Life): Research
Experience for Undergraduates (REU) in Environmental Sciences
This NSF-sponsored summer program is dedicated to introducing undergraduates to environmental
sciences at Flagstaff's Arboretum and the Merriam-Powell Center for
Environmental Research.
The NAU Ottens Undergraduate Research Grant for Native Americans in the Health
and Environmental Sciences
This grant provides students with the opportunity to work one-on-one with a
Northern Arizona University faculty mentor and up to $8,000 in funding to
assist with college expenses.
Undergraduate Research Mentoring: Helping students succeed in life sciences
research at NAU
This 12-month scholarship-mentoring program for sophomores and juniors seeks to encourage
talented undergraduates from underrepresented groups to pursue academic careers
in the life sciences fields through:
- research training
- financial support
- guidance
- encouragement
The Institute for Broadening Participation in STEM
This Pathways to Science website places particular emphasis on connecting underrepresented groups with STEM programs, funding, mentoring, and resources.

Four Directions Summer Research Program at Harvard
The Four Directions Summer Research Program provides a uniquely tailored program to those with the desire to serve Native American communities through science and medicine. The focus of the activity during the summer is participation in a cutting-edge basic science research project.

Summer Honors Undergraduate Research Program (SHURP) at Harvard
SHURP is a ten-week summer research program primarily for college students belonging to groups that are underrepresented in the sciences. Eligibility criteria include current undergraduate status, have already had at least one summer (or equivalent time) of experience in a research lab, have taken at least one upper-level molecular biology course, and are considering careers in biological or biomedical research sciences.
