Belay Policy
In order to belay at the climbing wall you must be belay
certified by Outdoor Adventures. You can become certified by taking a belay test
during open hours. Those interested in learning to belay can attend a clinic.
Belay certification process
Our process is as follows:
- Attend a belay clinic. The clinic is
not required if you already know how to belay and are able to pass the belay
test without taking the clinic.
- Take the belay test. You will demonstrate
proficiency in belaying and equipment usage.
You can use any belay method as long as you maintain control
of the rope and do not remove your break hand. We teach the PBUS, or pull, break,
under, slide method.
Our belay card system
Belay cards help our staff easily identify individuals both new and experienced so they can more efficiently supervise and
provide assistance to climbers at the wall. Our cards include:
- beginner belay card: belayers who pass the belay
test are issued a beginning belay card. This is your license to belay at the
Outdoor Adventures Wall. You are required to wear this card on your harness. Each
time you visit and competently belay at the wall you will receive a
"punch" on your card. After five visits you graduate to the competent
belay card.
- competent belay card: just like the beginner
belay card, this card is your license to belay at the Outdoor Adventures Wall. You are
required to wear this card on your harness, but no longer have to worry about
punches.
- lead card: This card serves as your license to
lead climb and belay at the Outdoor Adventures wall during established lead
hours.
