Landscape Conservation Initiative
The LANDSCAPE CONSERVATION INITIATIVE (LCI) forges new solutions to environmental challenges through a three-pronged approach: applied biological science, collaborative planning, and field-based educational experiences.
Scientists’ Consensus Statement on Oil Sands
For the past four years, the LCI has been involved in an international effort to synthesize the science about the development of unconventional oil, including the oil sands, also known as tar sands, in North America. On June 10, over 100 prominent scientists issued a statement authored by LCI director Tom Sisk and six Canadian colleagues, calling for a moratorium on new oil sands development, unless such expansion is consistent with implemented plans to rapidly reduce carbon pollution, safeguard biodiversity, protect human health, and respect treaty rights.
