PEER ADVISOR POSITION

Peer Advisor Qualifications:
  • Currently enrolled full-time at NAU. 
  • Have an overall GPA of 2.50 or higher (with a 2.75 preferred).
  • Able to work 30 hours/week during the STAR Program and 12-15 hours/week during the fall and spring semesters. 
  • Ability to multi-task and communicate effectively. 
  • Demonstrate sensitivity and empathy toward student concerns. 
  • Junior standing or higher preferred. 

Mentoring (60% of Duties)

  • Assist students in transitioning to the university environment. 
  • Develop the trust, respect, and confidence of assigned students. 
  • Assist with academic support for assigned students. 
  • Become knowledgeable of services provided by the IMS. 
  • Become knowledgeable of liberal studies and major requirements. 
  • Become knowledgeable of other student services at NAU. 
  • Develop helpful relationships with various faculty/staff on campus in order to better support assigned students. 
  • Know and use emergency procedures. Recognize a crisis situation and respond appropriately. 
  • Mentor STAR students and make appropriate referrals to other staff members or services. 

Administrative Meetings and Paperwork (25% of Duties)

  • Establish and maintain weekly contacts with assigned students during the STAR program, and at least three meetings per semester during the academic year. 
  • Review and share grade reports with students and make appropriate recommendations. 
  • Maintain individual student files and records that are accurate and up to date. 
  • Understand the financial aid process and provide appropriate advice to students. 
  • Attend all peer advisor meetings including orientation and training sessions. 
  • Assist students with understanding the drop/add and enrollment procedures. 
  • Assist in all other duties as assigned by your supervisor. 

Programming and Outreach (15% of Duties)

  • Assist in all orientation programs for STAR students, including STAR Check-in and Welcome activities.
  • Participate in weekend and evening activities during the STAR program, including the Thursday Night Series, Challenge Course, Community Service Day, Etiquette Dinner and Awards Ceremony.
  • Assist full-time staff in program related projects and assignments.
  • Assist in outreach efforts (e.g. presentations, Discover NAU, orientation, etc.). 

Employment Dates

  • Pre-program training week starting Monday, July 14 - 18, 2014; STAR Program dates July 19 - August 24, 2014; Fall Semester 2014 & Spring Semester 2015.

Compensation 

  • $2000.00 stipend for the summer program
  • $9.00/hour during the academic year.
