Employees must complete Form W-4 upon employment determining the amount of federal income tax that will be withheld from your paycheck.
If you do not complete a Form W-4, NAU will set your federal withholding to the default rate of Single/0.
You may change your Federal withholding election at anytime throughout the year by going to LOUIE - Employee Self-Service.
Employees may elect to be exempt from federal tax withholding. To maintain an exempt federal withholding status you must make this election by February 15th each year.
NOTE: If an election is not made your federal tax withholding rate will be set at the default rate of Single/0.
If you will be subject to alternative minimum tax, self-employment tax, or other taxes, or if any of your current jobs will end before the end of the year, please refer to the IRS Tax Withholding guidelines.
Arizona state tax
Arizona Revised Statutes (ARS) § 43-401 requires an employer
to make Form A-4 available to employees at all times and to inform employees of the
Arizona withholding election options.
An employee may elect an Arizona withholding percentage of zero. This election must be renewed at the beginning of each calendar year.
NOTE: If this election is not renewed your Arizona withholding will be set at the default rate of 2.7%.
New employees must complete Form A-4 within the first five days of employment. If you do not complete this form, the employer must withhold 2.7% of your gross taxable wages until the employer receives a completed form from you.

Northern Arizona University taxes employees based on the state in which their work is actually performed. If you are a Northern Arizona University employee and work in a state other than Arizona, you may have a tax liability to the state in which you work.
Due to the complexity of compliance and additional costs associated with out of state work, generally employees must live and work from the state of Arizona. Special advance approvals are required for an NAU to be hired or allowed to work from another state other than Arizona. Employees cannot work from another state for their own convenience, though certain business-justified or mission critical situations may be allowed with advance approval. See Procedures for departments with out of state employees.
