J. Lawrence and Lucy Walkup Scholarship, Donor
Mrs. Lucy Walkup
Northern Arizona University
'58 MED Education
NAU First Lady (1957-1979)
For Mrs. Lucy Walkup, giving back to NAU and the community is integral to her life. Philanthropy and service are decidedly a part of who she is: they define her history and her legacy. Whether it is the J. Lawrence Walkup Distinguished Professorship, reading to children in a local elementary school, or supporting a myriad of other NAU and community causes.
Mrs. Walkup proudly lives up to the reputation so firmly established by her late husband NAU President J. Lawrence Walkup. She, like her husband, has always believed this school will be student-oriented. From when it was the small college they first visited in 1948 to the growing university of the late 1900s, and now a nationally known institution, NAU will always be a place where faculty and students know each other. “students come first”, Mrs. Walkup says matter-of-factly. While her life of community service and hosting events in her home may have slowed a bit, her spirit and dedication never will. The Walkups continue to give, and their legacy is perpetually woven into the history of Northern Arizona University.
