How to Apply

Become a First Scholar

Applying to the First Scholars program is easy.  Just follow these steps:

  1. Apply to Northern Arizona University.  You must be accepted to the university and pay the $325 enrollment deposit in order to be selected for the First Scholars program.
  2. Submit the 2015-2016 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by February 1, 2015, to be considered for eligibility in the program.  The FAFSA will be available beginning January 1 at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/.
  3. Submit your online housing application at nau.edu/reslife.

Program application steps

  1. Complete and submit the First Scholars application, (you can do this by scanning and sending a digital copy to first.scholars@nau.edu or send a physical copy of the application to the address listed on the application form) which will be available in December 2014 for the 2015-2016 academic year.
  2. Complete the Student Strengths Inventory (SSI).  On February 23rd, 2015 eligible students will receive an invitation to complete the SSI online assessment. Students will have until March 8th, 2015 to complete this assessment.

Selection process

The First Scholars selection committee will meet in early March to review the application materials, academic records, essay response, and assessment results. 

Twenty students and up to ten alternates will be selected to participate in this comprehensive program. 

Students will be notified of selection by March 30th, 2015.
