How to Apply

Become a First Scholar

Applying to the First Scholars program is easy.  Just follow these steps:

  1. Apply to Northern Arizona University.  You must be accepted to the university and pay the $325 enrollment deposit in order to be selected for the First Scholars program.
  2. Submit the 2014-2015 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by February 1, 2014, to be considered for eligibility in the program.  The FAFSA will be available beginning January 1 at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/.
  3. Submit your online housing application at nau.edu/reslife.

Program application steps

  1. Complete and submit the Student Affairs Program Application and check the “First Scholars” program option.
  2. Submit supplemental program application.  Once we receive your interest form, you will receive a confirmation email from the program and request for additional application materials, which will include a response to an essay question.  These secondary application materials are due no later than 5:00 pm on Saturday, February 15, 2014.
  3. Complete the Student Strengths Inventory (SSI).  After February 15, eligible students will receive an invitation to complete an online assessment. 

Selection process

The First Scholars selection committee will meet in early March to review the application materials, academic records, essay response, and assessment results. 

Twenty students and up to ten alternates will be selected to participate in this comprehensive program. 

Students will be notified of selection by March 15, 2014.
