Applying for Aid

Detailed checklist

Step 1: Be admitted to Northern Arizona University

Apply to Northern Arizona University

Step 2: Request a PIN

Obtain a Personal Identification Number (PIN). This will allow you to access, complete, and electronically sign your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Parents and students must have their own PIN.

Step 3: Complete the FAFSA

Complete and submit the FAFSA (priority date February 1st), using information from the previous year's tax returns.

Step 4: Log on to LOUIE

After being admitted to Northern Arizona University, you will have access to the university’s Lumberjack Online University Information Environment (LOUIE). Here, you can check:

  • To Do List
  • offered awards
  • contact information

Step 5: Complete entrance counseling (for direct loans)

If you are a first time loan borrower at NAU, you will be required complete Loan Entrance Counseling in order for your loans to disburse.

Step 6: Sign a master promissory note (for direct loans)

If you are a first time loan borrower at NAU, you will be required to sign an electronic promissory note in order for your loans to disburse. 

Step 7: Enroll in classes

Meet with your academic advisor and then log in to LOUIE and enroll in classes. Continuing students must be enrolled to be packaged with their financial aid.

Step 8: Sign up for direct deposit 

If you do not have a direct deposit account, any financial aid refund will be mailed to the address listed in LOUIE.

Step 9: Pay charges not covered by your financial aid

If your awarded financial aid will not cover all of your charges, you must pay the difference by the due date on your bill. Student and Departmental Account Services has tuition due dates and payment methods to avoid service and or late fee charges.
