SPRINGERVILLE — The Final Environmental Impact Statement (FEIS) and Record of Decision (ROD) for the Rim Lakes Forest Restoration Project have been completed. Forest Supervisor Jim Zornes is the responsible official who signed the ROD on July 23.
The decision authorizes forest restoration treatments through uneven-aged thinning of trees and broadcast burning in ponderosa pine, pine-oak and dry mixed conifer forest stands on the Black Mesa Ranger District of the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests. These vegetation treatments will be applied along the Mogollon Rim west of and in the vicinity of Forest Lakes in Coconino County.
The FEIS and ROD are available on the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests website atwww.fs.usda.gov/asnf. Once there, navigate through the “Land and Resources Management” page to the “Projects” page to find the link to the project.
This project was planned under authorities outlined in the Healthy Forest Restoration Act of 2003. The FEIS was subject to the objection process pursuant to 36 CFR 218 Subpart A (2008 regulations), which occurred from May to June of this year. Three objections were received and were reviewed by the deputy regional forester. Modifications were made to the proposed action, which are described in detail in the ROD for the selected alternative. The Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests will now implement this project.
Compact disc copies of the FEIS and ROD are available upon request from the Black Mesa Ranger District, P.O. Box 968, Overgaard, AZ 85933, or by phone at (928) 535-7300. Paper copies are also available upon request.
