Degree overview

The BS in Dental Hygiene program has earned a nationwide reputation for educating dental hygiene professionals since its inception in 1973.

You will need to complete two years of prerequisites before starting the two-year Dental Hygiene Program, and admittance to the program is competitive.

Once admitted to the program, your classes will be taught by scientists, hygienists, and dentists who have received advanced education in their specialty areas. The program also features guest lecturers and clinical experts, including:

  • dental hygienists
  • periodontists
  • oral surgeons
  • orthodontists
  • endodontists
  • pediatric dentists
  • public heath dentists

Clinical practice and internships

Clinicals

Gain hands-on experience by learning to treat medically-compromised, home-bound, and developmentally-disabled patients using dental clinic and portable dental equipment.

Externships

You will need to complete a minimum two-week internship in a public health dental facility serving American Indian, military, or underserved populations throughout Arizona and in selected sites outside Arizona. International internship opportunities are also available.

Facilities

You’ll be educated in well-equipped, cutting-edge clinical facilities:

  • an 18-chair clinic and dental laboratory are used to develop and practice dental hygiene procedures, using state of the art dental equipment, including Velscope, Spectra, and Intraoral camera.
  • Radiographic technique is taught in a 5-chair facility, which includes a panoramic x-ray machine, and digital x-ray equipment.
  • The comfortably-furnished student seminar/computer center has a beautiful view of the San Francisco Peaks and is a pleasant place to access web courses and study between classes.
