Undergraduates making an impact

Students from across the nation work with faculty on research projects that directly impact the field of mathematics in the Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program.

Get published—publications from studies are often co-authored by the REU students who contributed to them.

Introduction

The REU Program is an opportunity for six top undergraduates from around the country to visit NAU to work one-on-one with actively researching faculty mentors. The students are on the NAU campus for 8 weeks and attend both regular lectures by NAU Department of Mathematics and Statistics faculty as well as lectures by external visitors. The culmination of the program is the presentation of student projects and the corresponding student reports. The level of research involved is generally fairly advanced, targeted at gifted Juniors. This undergraduate, mentored research has on occasion lead to joint publications of papers in refereed journals. It is preferable that the successful applicant have some exposure to LaTeX prior to the REU experience.

Funding

Funding for this program is provided by the National Science Foundation, Award DMS-0851697

Eligibility

Participants must be citizens or permanent residents of the United States, and should expect to graduate in Fall 2012 or Spring 2013. Women and minorities are strongly encouraged to apply.

Dates

The program will run for eight weeks, from May 29 through July 20, 2012.

Benefits

Each participant will receive lodging in an on-campus dormitory, a $3,600 stipend, reimbursement for modest and reasonable travel expenses, and a small allowance for some food expenses. Six semester credits will be earned at Northern Arizona University, which can be transferred to the participant's home institution.

The Program

Faculty involved in the NAU-REU program are active researchers in several areas of mathematics. For Summer 2012, the mentors will be:

  • Operations Research - Shafiu Jibrin
  • Partial Differential Equations - John Neuberger and James W. Swift

Participants will work on research projects within one of these areas. Seminars will take place on a regular basis; student participants are expected to attend all seminars and to give a presentation at the end of the summer on their project.
