Goal

This program is intended to extend a high school student's horizons about the world of mathematics, achieved through a variety of problem solving exercises. The goal is to have students think of mathematics as fun, something deeper and more creative than they typically see in formal textbooks and classes; a subject that can lead to interesting, well-paid careers and enrich their lives.

What is a Math Circle?

The types of problems seen in a Math Circles Program are fundamentally different from those in regular high school courses where classic problem solving is absent from the curriculum. In contrast to disciplines such as English and History which more consistently elevate critical thinking and analysis, high school mathematics classes understandably emphasize building those skills which are essential for daily living and important for learning other disciplines. Mathematics is seen as a foundation for science and engineering rather than as a subject in itself. It is not surprising that few students leave high school interested in pursuing mathematics. The goal of the Math Circles program is to provide a venue for students to work on interesting, easily stated problems. For further information visit http://www.mathcircles.org/.

History

Math Circles originated in Hungary more than a century ago and have been part of the training of many great scientists and mathematicians from Eastern Europe and Asia. The math circles also led eventually to the start of many national and international math contests, including the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) in 1959 in Romania. Math Circles were started in 1998 in the San Francisco bay area and their popularity continues to spread across the United States.

Registration

We need you if you like puzzles, games, and thinking in general. Interested students should register for the program by filling the form or by contacting us by email. We are also interested in hearing from parents who would be willing to help plan our events, coordinate refreshments and contribute more generally with this project.
