Windows 8

As a transition to the Windows 8 Tile Screen interface, we are installing Classic Shell to provide the traditional Start Button on the Desktop. (The Tile Screen is the new Windows 8 interface and the Desktop is the more traditional Windows interface.) There are, however, still a few basics that you should know to function efficiently. These are listed below and apply only to a non-touch screen display.

Need to Know

  • If you are not taken to the Desktop the first time you logon to a PC Lab or Classroom machine, simply click the Desktop Tile on the Tile Screen.
  • Upon occasion, if you click on a file, you will be take to a Tile Screen App. To close a Tile Screen App, place the cursor at the top of the display, click and hold the left mouse button, and drag it to the bottom of the display.
  • To connect to a projector simply us the Windows Key + P and select Duplicate.
  • DVD Videos do not automatically play when inserted in the drive. To play a DVD Video, open "Computer", right click over the DVD drive, and select "Play with PowerDVD" (classrooms) or "Play with VLC media player"
  • Windows 8 Roaming Profiles (which house basic account configuration) do not play well with Windows 7 Roaming Profiles. Because of this you’ll be starting over in our PC Labs. The most notable items that you may miss are bookmarks for Firefox and Chrome and possibly ArcGIS configurations. Much of your old Windows 7 Roaming Profile information can be retrieved… just let us know if you are missing something important.

PowerPoint 2013 AddendumNew

Sometimes when you start your PowerPoint slide show, a) the monitor displays your slide as well as "Next slide" and "Notes" and b) the projector displays only your slide and the output displayed on the projector does not look correct or you just don't want this type of setup. If this is the case, select DISPLAY SETTINGS > Duplicate Slide Show
