I got my start in the construction business framing houses and condominiums on the front range of Colorado.  I liked working outside and I found that the people in the construction business are smart, independent, and resourceful.  I also liked feeling of accomplishment that comes from building things.

During my twenty five year construction career, I have completed projects in Colorado, Washington DC, North Carolina, and Arizona. I'm proud to be teaching in one of the best CM programs in the country.

My wife and I have been together for thirty years, and we have three children who make us laugh and continue to drive us nuts. We enjoy hiking and exploring the beautiful scenery that surrounds Flagstaff.

I have been at Northern Arizona University since 1995 and find Northern Arizona University and Flagstaff great places to live and work.  My professional interests lie in the areas of environmental health and risk assessment, hazardous waste management, and air quality.  I am very interested in the pedagogy of engineering education and how our students are challenged to learn and thereby succeed.  I am also a strong proponent of international education for engineers.

Being a degreed chemical engineer, my contribution to the program lies in my process engineering background.  My research projects include the study of low temperature fluidized drying regimes for biomass such as wood slash (funded by the USDA-FS) and environmental management systems (for the university itself, in conjunction with the Northern Arizona University Office of Sustainability; funded by the State of Arizona’s ERDENE program).

I also work closely with the university’s Institute for Tribal Environmental Professionals (ITEP) on two large projects: the 15-year old American Indian Air Quality Training Program (AIAQTP) sponsored by the EPA Office of Air and Radiation, and a new project involving risk assessment from hazardous waste sites on or impacting Indian Country which is funded through EPA’s Office of Solid Waste and Emergency Response.

In 2002-2003, I had the opportunity to be a Fulbright Scholar in Zittau Germany where I worked on environmental management systems in a university setting, but more importantly, fell in love with the culture and dynamic of Europe.

I plan to return to Dresden, Germany in 2009-2010 for another sabbatical working on a design/teaching project at the University of Applied Sciences.  I continue to struggle with the German language, finding Italian much easier for my (genetically) Italian brain!

I have two grown sons: one is a Computer Science engineering working in the field on biological recognition software; the other is working on his MS in Mechanical Engineering at the University of West Virginia, with an emphasis in alternative energy systems.

I also have one young heeler mix who enjoys the Flagstaff forests as much as anyone.  My passions include road cycling, running, yoga, hiking/snowshoeing, backpacking and canoeing.  I support the environment by carpooling, biking when I can, buying local produce from the Flagstaff Community Supported Agriculture cooperative, recycling, composting, and trying to live a simple but connected life.

Prior to joining the faculty at NAU, Rob worked as a Division Manager at a leading Flagstaff based design build general contracting firm managing heavy civil construction projects throughout Northern Arizona.  His roles provided him in depth experience in estimating, budget preparation, job cost management, scheduling, value engineering, and subcontractor buyout for self-performed, subcontracted, and alternative delivery method projects.
Before his tenure in heavy civil construction, Rob worked as a project manager at a respected, nationally known, design build and real estate development firm managing multiple project types.  These included public sector, institutional, and private design build class A office projects where Rob was heavily involved in both preconstruction and construction phase services.
Rob has a foundation from time spent as a superintendent, structural inspector, and field testing technician at the beginning of his career on a wide variety of residential, heavy highway, and commercial projects which allowed him to work across the United States from California to Maine.
Rob has specialized in the management of both building and civil Construction Manager at Risk (CMAR) and Design Build projects.  These include the NAU W.A. Franke College of Business, the High Country Conference Center, multiple pedestrian walkway reconfigurations, and campus beautification projects including the Historic NAU North Quad.
His dedication to sustainable design and construction has allowed him to be part of multiple LEED® Certified projects including four gold and one platinum certified building.  Rob sat on the first Board of Directors for the Northern Arizona Branch of the United States Green Building Council for three years and worked to integrate sustainable design initiatives into all of his projects.

Alan Francis teaches courses related to the history of the built environment, construction graphics, and building systems. His research focuses on digital design and fabrication as elements in an integrated design process that combines the use of Building Information Modeling, whole-building energy and lifecycle-impact simulation to achieve net zero-energy architecture. His work explores the essential nature of collaboration between the key contributors in a forward-looking process of architectural production.

Francis’ background includes academic and work experience in the areas of design, building science, commercial aviation and business. He earned his undergraduate degree in business at San Jose State University. During his architectural graduate work at Arizona State University, Francis received the American Institute of Architects’ Henry Adams Medal and the ARCC / King Student  Medal for Excellence in Architectural + Environmental Research.

I am convinced a great builder needs much more than a technical education. A great builder embarks on a lifelong quest for learning with a keen curiosity, and a commitment to the welfare of others. We are most proud of our reputation as a service learning organization.

I came to Northern Arizona University in 1998 after a thirty year career in the Design/Development and Construction Industries.

I began my career as a field engineer in public-service, moving on to work in industrial construction, finishing as an executive of an ENR top 50 AEC firm on complex public-use facilities such as museums, stadiums, and assembly halls. I have worked across the United States and abroad.

During my tenure at Northern Arizona University I have worked on a variety of development projects, including the Engineering Complex and the Wild Bill Ecological Center.

In 2003/2004 I served as a mentor for United Nations, Institute for Training and Research fellowship working in the post conflict re-building of Afghanistan.

I first hopped off a Greyhound bus at the depot here in the summer of 1974.

My first 15 years here were spent enjoying the Southwest canyons, rivers and mountains. I spent as much time as I possibly could, in between getting two degrees, biking, hiking, and river running.

The second fifteen years plus included getting married, the birth of a beautiful baby girl, and settling in to the pursuit of excellent Project Management.

Aside from spending a year in Iran, four months in Switzerland, and three in Iceland, I’ve pretty much called Flagstaff my home.  I hope to be here at least another ten years.

I love the challenges and intricacies of the built environment, and get excited about any kind of building. I have been involved in the construction industry since 1979.

John joined the faculty of Construction Management in 2007 after serving as an instructor for the Northern Arizona University Civil Engineering Department. Prior to moving to Flagstaff, he spent two years traveling around North and Central America.  He spent four months at the Cloudbridge Preserve in Costa Rica mapping and developing databases for biological research.

John's engineering career spans a wide variety of design and forensic engineering experiences. He spent the first eight years of his career performing structural consulting engineering in Chicago. This work culminated with the Minneapolis Public Library and the Overture Center for the Arts in Madison Wisconsin.

He was also involved with forensic investigations in Iowa and Wisconsin and participated in structural coordination efforts at Ground Zero in September of 2001. He holds professional engineering licenses in the States of Arizona an Illinois.

He is currently working on a Doctorate of Education in Curriculum and Instruction with an emphasis in Higher Education. His academic interests lie in developing construction engineering curricula and in utilizing tablet PC technology in the classroom.

He is also involved with a transdisciplinary course that incorporates engineering, construction, cultural anthropology and emergency medicine in an immersive experiential setting that is aimed to prepare students for international development projects.

John is a member of Engineers without Borders, ASCE, AISC and The Building Smart Alliance and advises the construction management student organization (CMO).
