Cello Studio
The NAU School of Music is an exciting and rewarding community for young cellists to study and perform music. Our high-caliber instrumental ensembles and individualized instruction add to a memorable university musical experience. Cellists at NAU receive weekly lessons and master classes, in addition to regular technique classes.
Values of the Cello Studio:
- Teaching fundamental principles of technique that can be applied universally
- Learning how to bridge the gap between technique and musicianship
- Allowing students to be teachers as well as learners
- Developing strong and convincing communication skills
Please contact Dr. Mary Ann Ramos (email) directly for inquiries about the NAU Cello Studio, or if you’d like to arrange a lesson or personal tour of the School of Music facilities.

Studio expectations
Lessons
All cello music majors receive weekly 60-minute lessons with Dr. Ramos throughout the semester.
Cello Studio class
Providing weekly performance opportunities, cello studio class meets every Tuesday from 11:10am to 12:25pm, in room 144. Students are required to play in studio class at least 3 times per semester, but are encouraged to perform each week. All students are called upon to make constructive comments in an open forum after each performance, nurturing the critical thinking and listening skills which are essential for any well-rounded musician and teacher.
Cello Studio recital
All cello students perform in a cello studio recital each semester.
Cello technique class
Scales, arpeggios, 3rds, 6ths, octaves, etudes, and other exercises are an important part of daily practice, reinforced by weekly technique classes. Students learn the geography of the cello while studying principles of tension-free and relaxed cello technique.
