Before coming to NAU, Stephen
Brown taught at the University of Connecticut (Assistant Professor, 2000-2001)
and the Oberlin Conservatory (Assistant Professor 2001-2007; promoted to
Associate Professor with tenure 2007).
Professor Brown has done
research in post-tonal theory and analysis, transformational theory, and the
music of Shostakovich.
He has given papers at numerous venues, including the Society for Music Theory national conference, the International Musicological Society, the New England Conference of Music Theorists, Music Theory Midwest, and the West Coast Conference of Music Theory and Analysis. His articles appear or are forthcoming in numerous journals, including Music Theory Spectrum, Music Analysis, Journal of Music Theory, and Music Theory Online.
