A STEAM afFaire & UVS 2015
Focusing on Critical Making and Critical Thinking
We encourage student proposals from all disciplines. We will engage and complicate discussions on the impact of video games in areas such as music, business, physics, philosophy, animation, rhetoric, engineering, gender, and ethnicity between March 26th and 28th. On Thursday, March 26th, we will host a roundtable discussion to direct our focus for the following two days. The next day, Friday March 27th, will feature a narrated game night designed to entertain and complicate discussions of what is play. Our final day, Saturday March 28th, will allow students to share their research and specific passions through presentations.

Jesse Will Coats is a senior software engineer from Zynga.com, the company that has brought us "Farmville" and "Words with Friends". He will attend all three nights and is excited to engage with symposium participants and presenters.
Erik Kain is a videogame blogger for Forbes
magazine. The Hedged Knight
joined us last year and shared his vast knowledge with participants in a discussion about the industry, its direction, and how to get involved. We look forward to welcoming "The Forbes Guy" back!

How to Participate
The easiest way to participate is to attend. There are no fees or registration necessary, all you have to do is show up. Alternatively, you can submit a proposal to present your research on Saturday, you can participate by playing games on Friday night, or you can submit a proposal to present your excellent prototype (a videogame, a console, a board game) for the STEAM afFaire. If it's that easy, why wouldn't you go?

STEAM is an acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics. NAU’s IWP believes strongly that traditional STEM initiatives grow stronger if paired with the arts. STEAM affects original research and design by incorporating creative and critical thinking and making. We encourage students to use the content and critical thinking skills learned in their Liberal Studies courses (the breadth of their degree programs) as the foundation for their core classes (the depth of their degree programs).
The Undergraduate Videogame Symposium will incorporate a STEAM Faire for students to present their work at a table, on a poster, on a laptop with headphones… what are you working on personally? academically? what has inspired these projects?
