LEARNERS AND LEARNING
Teaching begins with understanding the learner and learning history and social studies begins with inquiry, the mindset through which researchers in history and the social studies disciplines approach their work, and asking good questions and using good evidence to answer them.
Teaching inquiry involves innovative and engaging instructional practices that require learners to ask research questions, gather and interpret primary- and secondary-source evidence, and craft thoughtful conclusions and interpretations using that evidence.
Teachers draw upon their content areas in the history and social studies disciplines in order to engage learners in inquiry-based instruction and make the content knowledge relevant to learners by helping them connect it to local, state, national, and global issues.
