Dr. Cliff Harkins (1932) Distinguished Citizen of the Year award

Dr. Cliff Harkins graduated from Northern Arizona University in 1933 and was president of the NAU Alumni Association in 1938. He was State Superintendent of Public Instruction for the State of Arizona, as well as the Superintendent of the Madison District in Phoenix during his 50-year career in education. He pioneered education advancement in Arizona and received the Distinguished Citizen award himself in 1974. The award was subsequently named in his honor. Cliff died in 1992.

The Dr. Cliff Harkins Distinguished Citizen of the Year award is presented annually to recognize distinguished service to non-profit organizations; governmental assignments at the municipal, county, state, or federal level; or other outstanding citizen service. Preference is given to those who have earned a degree from NAU.
